National Beauty Culturists' League, Inc. History

In 1919, R. V. Randolph, S. L. Latimer, E. R. Cargel, M. Paris and B. Tolliver came together with the common idea of improving conditions in the cosmetology industry and on March 30th, 1940, the National Beauty Culturists' League, Inc. (NBCL) was chartered as a nonprofit organization.  Since then, we have dedicated our energies toward fulfilling the following purposes set forth by our founders:

  • To establish high standards of conduct and operation.

  • To encourage scientific methods of hair, scalp and skin treatment.

  • To gather, prepare and disseminate educational information.

  • To seek legislation beneficial to the beauty profession.

  • To promote goodwill and cooperative effort among all beauticians, manufacturers, and persons engaged in related fields.

  • To promote the general welfare and raise the public image of those engaged in the beauty culture field.

NBCL's strength is within the links that bind our organization together.  We have a comprehensive approach toward building a unified program, and we are the only organization with a professional degree program in Cosmetology.  We currently have thousands of members, 37 states, Caribbean, England and Newfoundland.  And with the emphasis that we are currently placing on growth, we expect these numbers to increase exponentially.

The number of ethnic consumers - African Americans, Asians and Hispanics - in America is growing at a phenomenal rate and the increase is drastically changing the cosmetology industry. For 96 years, NBCL has led the way in the multicultural beauty revolution through offering an array of tools that make it safe for professionals to better service their ethnic clients.  If you are serious about your profession and serving your clientele, link up with us!  And, become an active member in the nation's oldest and most prestigious organziation for Cosmetologists, Nail Technicians, Barbers, and Skin Care Professionals.
